OpenStreetMap Belgium is the local community behind OpenStreetMap in Belgium, the free, editable map of the world built and maintained by volunteers. It started in 2013 as an informal group of mappers, and is now the official Belgian chapter of the OpenStreetMap Foundation. It acts as the point of contact between the international OpenStreetMap project and organisations, governments and companies in Belgium.
# Why they matter to us
OpenStreetMap is public geographic infrastructure that anyone can read, copy and improve, an alternative to depending on a handful of proprietary map providers for something as basic as a street address. OpenStreetMap Belgium organises the mapathons, meetups and Open Summer of Code projects that keep that data current.
# Where we connect
- Open geographic data as public infrastructure, built and owned by no single company.
- Free software and open data as the same fight, one map edit at a time.
