Bits of Freedom is the leading Dutch digital rights organisation, working since 2000 to protect privacy and the freedom to communicate. They combine policy advocacy, legal action and public campaigns to keep the Dutch — and by extension European — digital environment open and free.
# Why they matter to us
The Netherlands often debates the same digital files Belgium does, only a step earlier and louder. Bits of Freedom’s positions on encryption, telecom surveillance, biometric ID and platform regulation give us well-tested arguments and a neighbour to coordinate with. As a long-standing EDRi member, they’re also a reliable relay between Brussels and the broader digital rights movement.
# Where we connect
- Shared resistance to indiscriminate surveillance, data retention and “chat control” proposals.
- Common ground on strong encryption as a baseline civil right.
- Joint interest in keeping the Benelux a region that defends, rather than erodes, digital freedoms.
